Massachusetts Solar Incentives, Programs, and Rebates

Solar Energy has taken the alternative energy field by storm, and all the data points toward 2020 being the best year so far for you to switch to solar energy.

Massachusetts Solar Incentives

With rebates stacked on top of tax incentives and credits, the state of Massachusetts has one of the best programs for solar homeowners. If you are considering the switch to solar, Higgins has the answers to your questions, and be sure to check out the best solar incentives the state of Massachusetts has to offer!

As is with any major investment, it is wise to do your research beforehand on these programs and incentives, as there may be prerequisites and additional requirements. Source links have been provided for your convenience.

Residential Renewable Energy Income Tax Credit

In the state of Massachusetts, homeowners who install a renewable energy source for their property, including solar panel systems, are allowed a solar energy credit of up to 15% or $1000 OFF of the total purchase price of their system installation, based on your personal income tax. In a nutshell, the state of Massachusetts will help pay for your solar panel system installation as an incentive to make switching to a renewable energy source less daunting!

Federal Solar Tax Exemptions

The Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) is a federal tax break that allows homeowners and residential businesses with solar panel systems to claim up to 26% of their total solar installation costs from their federal tax liability. This means that next tax season when you file, you can apply a credit towards your personal income taxes that you would typically pay to the federal government. It is worth mentioning that despite the immense success of this tax credit program, the benefits are decreasing yearly, so next year’s incentive will not be as high.

Massachusetts Solar Loan Program

The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER) has found that both homeowners and the Commonwealth benefit from solar energy MORE when homeowners and residential businesses directly own their system rather than leasing or owning through a 3rd party. The loan program uses credit enhancements to encourage solar ownership by making fixed-interest, low payments toward the cost of a solar panel installation. The loan program must be used with a qualified solar installer, such as Higgins Energy!

Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART)

The SMART program is a long-term sustainable solar incentive program to help Massachusetts become the most energy-efficient state in the country. If you meet and submit all the requirements, you can expect the Electric Distribution Company (EDC) to make payments and provide bill credits to you monthly! The compensation is based on a fixed rate per kilowatt hour of solar energy for up to 10-20 years, depending on the size of your solar system.

Net Metering in Massachusetts

If during peak sunlight hours, your solar panel system produces an excess amount of energy, that energy is sent back to the energy grid. When this happens, you will receive a credit on your energy bill if you work with Unitil, Eversource, or National Grid. This incentive is called net metering, and it is a massive benefit if your area allows it. Please check the link below for more information.

Massachusetts Storage Incentives

A standard grid-tied solar system is required to have a safety mechanism that will shut down the system in case of an emergency power outage. Therefore, it is wise to invest in a battery storage system for your new solar panels, in the case of a power outage, so that your solar system continues to work even when the power goes out. Additionally, you can receive incentives through the National Grid Connected Solutions program for using your solar battery during peak usage times.
