Been Thinking About Solar? Then Don’t Miss Out! Here is What You Need to Know About SRECs.

The MA SREC II program is set to expire in early 2018.

SRECs (Solar Renewable Energy Credit) = A Quarterly Check Sent to You!

This means for MA residents seeking to go solar and to sell their SRECs they MUST have their system installed before the end of the 2017!

The key thing to understand is that SRECs are added value.  This is on top of the electricity savings you’re already getting from a solar array. Not only do you reduce or eliminate your electric bill, you produce credits! SRECs are vouchers that you automatically earn when you produce solar energy for your home, to the tune of 1 SREC for every 1 MWh (1,000 kWh) of energy you produce. That can amount to thousands of dollars per year!

How is this so?  In January 2010, the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER) launched the very first Massachusetts SREC (Solar Renewable Energy Credit) program. The SREC program requires that power companies obtain a certain percentage of electricity from renewable sources, and rather than build solar plants, utilities actually buy their mandated amount of renewable energy in the form of SRECs.  If you own your solar system, they buy them from you!

On April 25, 2014, the DOER launched its SREC-II program to carry Massachusetts to its goal of installing 1,600 MW of solar capacity by 2020.  Phase II is about to end, so if you are interested in getting a solar system, be sure to have it installed this summer and get your paperwork in before the end of the SREC II program.  Call Jared Sawabi, Solar Project Manager at Higgins Energy Alternatives for details.
